4.4 Crafting your target text

Now we leave macroelements in order to focus on microelements and deal with more local aspects of text production such as linking, titling, paragraphing, emphasizing and hedging, and wording. By crafting we mean the way in which writers and translators put together the various pieces of the text, linking ideas through sentences and paragraphs within an overall structure.

Imagine yourself translating the following paragraph (example taken from Matthews et al, 2000: 108):

Two canine cadavers with orthopaedic abnormalities were identified which included a first dog that had an unusual deformity secondary to premature closure of the distal ulnar physis and a second dog that had a hypertrophic nonunion of the femur, and the radius and femur of both dogs were harvested and cleaned of soft tissue.
